Navy’s state-of-the-art data centre receives global recognition

The Indonesian Navy has received the prestigious Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award for their new, state-of-the-art Hydro-Oceanography Data Centre (HDC), which provides citizens and shipping companies access to hydrography and oceanography data.
Selected from among more than 300,000 organisations worldwide, the Navy’s Hydrography and Oceanography department (Pushidrosal), were presented with their awards yesterday by Jack Dangermond, Founder and CEO of global mapping giant Esri.
The award recognises the agency’s innovative use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to support the navy, maritime and shipping industries.
HDC is supported by the world leading location-based analytics platform called ArcGIS, which sits on top of their current business processing systems.
ArcGIS facilitates the seamless integration of data coming from the agency’s various departments and the Navy’s affiliated institutions. It then analyses and visualises the data on a dynamic mapping dashboard to give decision-makers a more compelling view of the factors that may affect their operations while at sea.
In addition, the technology has also allowed Pushidrosal to become more efficient with how it shares data with other departments across the organisation – putting an end to the old practice of using USB flash drives to transfer large amounts of information.
“Pushidrosal’s global recognition is well deserved,” Esri Indonesia CEO A. Istamar said.
“Prior to the implementation of HDC, decision-makers at sea assessed risk by studying many digital and non-digital sources such as nautical charts, reports on atmospheric and ocean conditions and various other operational reports. This process has been vastly improved HDC’s cutting-edge features,” he added.
“In addition, by exporting all data to a secure and scalable platform, captains at sea are able to achieve immediate situational awareness, which allows them to respond to events and situtations in the most efficient way possible.”
“This will allow maritime, fisheries and shipping companies to easily predict the impact of forecasted climate conditions on their ship movement,” Mr Istamar said.
“In the same way, our naval commanders can use the data from HDC to determine the impact of the climate, hydrology, and oceanography on naval missions.”
Beyond supporting operations at sea, maritime, fisheries and shipping companies can also leverage the platform to purchase navigation maps from the navy instead of visiting Pushidrosal’s office to conduct the transaction.
This will enable them to obtain access to maps that would help them prevent from hitting coral reefs and breakwaters and other maritime accidents from happening.
Receiving the award on behalf of Pushidrosal, the Head of Pushidrosal - Laksamana Pertama TNI Harjo Susmoro said, “We are very honoured to receive this award and see our use of GIS technology transform how the Navy operates.”
“The HDC plays a critical role in achieving Pushidrosal’s mandate of supporting the Navy in defending our seas and in providing strategic support to the maritime and shipping industry.”
“Pushidrosal is committed to ensure the HDC is serving the needs of its stakeholders. As such we will also be working with Esri Indonesia to equip our staff with the necessary skill sets for us to maximise the power of the ArcGIS platform further,” he said.
