PT. Kideco Jaya Agung’s (Kideco) award-winning land acquisition and compensation management tool, Nawasena — which means successful and prosperous future — is redefining land bank management workflows for industry players.

Kideco is the country’s leading coal mining operation in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan with a 47,500-hectare concession and an average annual production of over 30 million tons.

Managing a complex land bank of that size led company leadership to explore common spatial technologies to close the gaps in critical processes with comprehensive, accurate data.

Kideco’s digital transformation replaced its paper-based workflows with Nawasena and put Kideco on the map as one of the country’s most innovative players.

It’s all part of the mining giant’s concerted effort to capture data accurately and store it securely to ensure compliance with Indonesian mining regulations regarding amicable settlements and resolution of conflicts over mining zones.

Land acquisition and compensation is a multi-stakeholder process involving several departments within Kideco, but also local landowners.

Nawasena leverages geographic information systems (GIS) to integrate data from multiple sources into a single source of truth — and by sharing in real-time to other enterprise systems, it facilitates informed decision-making based on accurate data across Kideco.

Built on ArcGIS, Nawasena replaces legacy paper-based workflows, isolated databases, and offline systems which created challenges in terms of monitoring, analysis, and misinformed decisions caused by siloed data.

"Before we have this application, we found it extremely challenging to gain a visual overview of the status of these land areas that we own. We had to input data one by one, including names, locations, and land status, and sometimes the information was not synchronized, both in terms of written data and on-field locations," said Arif Kayanto, Chief of Legal & Corporate Affairs Officer at PT. Kideco Jaya Agung.

Nawasena enhanced the accuracy and validity of the data and enabled collaboration among stakeholders from across the business.

Platform users were empowered to customize their view based on specific requirements in an intuitive system that allowed collection, analysis, and monitoring of land compensation processes.

This simplified the land compensation process for active mining projects and enabled land acquisition workflows to kick off in before Kideco was ready to break ground or even during the operations.

Once land has been earmarked for future mining projects, acquisition and compensation workflows are triggered — starting with collecting land rights data, certificates, planning fair acquisition and execution plans.

Having access to data — past, present and future — has been key to maintaining Kideco’s project timelines, minimizing disruptions, and ensuring efficient land acquisition and fair compensation.
