Jakarta is continuously evolving toward its vision of becoming a global smart city.

One key strategy in this transformation is leveraging geospatial technology to optimize urban planning and design. This was highlighted by Sulistyo, Head of Professional Services Esri Indonesia, during his presentation at the Jakarta Investment Festival (JIF) 2024, hosted by the Provincial Government of Jakarta.

“Geographic Information System (GIS) technology can visualize multiple layers of data through digital maps. This technology enables investors, corporations, and government officials to engage in discussions that were previously unexplored,” explained Sulistyo during the event on Friday (6/9).

He further elaborated that geospatial mapping solutions visualize multiple layers of data to uncover previously unknown trends. For example, the layers of data could include commercial and industrial property values, access from the property to ports and highways, and the demographics of nearby residential communities. These details inform potential investors of what opportunities the city has to offer in its next phase of development.

Strengthening Jakarta’s vision as a global smart city, by leveraging geospatial (smart mapping) technology to analyze layers of property and location data, was a core topic at the 2024 Jakarta Investment Festival (JIF).

A key goal from JIF’s ‘Investing in Jakarta’s Urban Redevelopment’ thematic discussion is to leverage existing investment structures and enhance development in Jakarta as it transforms from the seat of governmental power to a global commerce hub.

Discussions touched on Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions that enhance data acquisition and analysis in urban planning and design, and also identified new investment collaboration opportunities.

Sulistyo emphasized the importance of geospatial-based predictive analysis. “With spatial data, maps become more than just static visuals; they become predictive tools capable of simulating the challenges and successes of investment projects,” he said.

Esri is a provider of geospatial technology, which enables corporate entities and governments alike to leverage location-based data analytics, to drive operational efficiencies and facilitate data-driven and evidence-based decision making.

“Jakarta requires well-informed planning concerning livability, mobility, and infrastructure. With GIS, city planners and officials can access data on demographics, the economy, traffic, and infrastructure, whether at a macro or micro level,” Sulistyo explained.

He concluded by stating that geospatial solutions have evolved beyond traditional mapping to become strategic tools for decision-making.

“Imagine Jakarta, where infrastructure is designed with precision, where resources are allocated for value-based outcomes, and where the impacts of development are analyzed and mitigated before they even occur. This is not in the distant future; it’s the reality that geospatial data is enabling today,” he said.
