The June 2024 ArcGIS Online update introduced several new features and capabilities, most importantly, the new user type licencing model that streamlines administration workflows and expands current user roles.
We ran through what these changes mean for existing user types, developer subscriptions, capabilities and desktop licencing in this webinar.
In a nutshell, the user type model introduced in 2018, successfully combined capabilities and apps together to align with the needs of different GIS users.
In June 2024, the user type licence model changed to include six role-based user types with progressively expanding capabilities, apps and services — ranging from Viewer to Professional Plus.
When does it all come into effect?
The new user types was automatically updated in ArcGIS Online in June 2024 with updates scheduled to be rolled out to ArcGIS Enterprise with the 11.4 version due for release in November 2024.
What are the benefits of the new user types in ArcGIS?
Designed to simplify licence administration and enhance overall functionality, the new ArcGIS user types streamline the management of licences for more efficiency and scalable growth.
- Role-based access: The introduction of role-based access means users will have tools tailored to their specific roles within an organisation. This ensures a data analyst, for example, will get access to different tools compared to a field technician and the right tools are provided for the right task.
- Enhanced capabilities: The new user types offer a broader range of capabilities, from advanced spatial analysis to real-time data monitoring which is great for organisations looking to leverage advanced functionality for better decision-making processes.
- Simplified administration: With clearer, more straightforward licensing options, administrators can focus on strategic initiatives rather than getting bogged down by administrative tasks, facilitating easier onboarding and scaling as the organisation grows.
What do ArcGIS licence changes mean for your organisation?
- Streamlined workflows: Reduce redundancies and ensure each team member is equipped with the right tools to perform their tasks by aligning user capabilities with roles.
- Scalable growth: Expand your user base without the administrative hurdles and ensure ArcGIS can grow and accommodate increasing demands and complexities.
- Future-proofing: The enhanced capabilities and scalable nature of the new user types better equips organisations to handle emerging geospatial challenges and opportunities.
