Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) - one of Indonesia’s largest state-owned universities – has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading geospatial solutions provider Esri Indonesia to promote the use of advanced smart mapping technology to students.
Esri Indonesia CEO Bima Priadi and UNHAS Rector Prof. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, MA. signed the MoU at the UNHAS campus on 27 February 2015.
Under the MoU, UNHAS will receive an education licence program, composed of software licences and technical workshops, which will make ArcGIS – the world’s leading spatial technology – widely accessible to students.
Furthermore, included in the program is the provision of various GIS resources and publications from Esri Indonesia and two all-access passes to the Esri Asia Pacific User Conference happening in Thailand later this year.
“We admire and respect the dedication of UNHAS’ management to help their students realise their potential, and are eager to assist by nurturing their students’ skills and knowledge of GIS technology and spatial science,” Mr Priadi said.
“The rapid adoption of GIS technology by non-traditional markets – such as retailers, telecommunications businesses and the media – has stirred an unprecedented demand for skilled spatial professionals in the workforce.
“This is why having the country’s university sector provide greater access to GIS technology is so important.
“It is vital we proactively grow the skills of the future workforce in order to meet the rising demand in Indonesia for GIS professionals – and we applaud UNHAS for helping meet this demand.”
